The Warm Up

Move Safe, Move Better, Fight Free Warm Philosophy

“If you’re going to prepare for lifting you should be covered in sweat before you add any load from a dynamic warmup,” -Kelly Starrett

The 1st purpose of the warm up is to address issues. Major issues are addressed on your own through self-discovery and they cannot be stated enough. You, the martial artist are on a never ending road to self discovery. Your goal should you choose to accept it, is to find the corners in your game, for example, you need to have so many range of motion in your hips, shoulders, ankles, wrist, etc.  This is in its own frame is the beautiful struggle and is an easy way to measure success. We will provide the necessary tools for you to succeed in this end.

The 2nd purpose of the warm is to warm up. The muscles and joints should be moving purposefully and synergistically. Pavel Tsatsouline calls this “the groove”. And before any class class, we should be attacking this groove so that we can fight free.

We should be sweaty before we do any major movements, period! Running, Lifting, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling should have good warm ups prior to to lessen the potential for injuries.

How do we accomplish this ideas? Simply by recreating basic human patterns that appear in the sport/activity that we’re doing over and over again. The Houdini in it is to make it fun and practical.
